Avian influenza is affecting 53 species across Chile, including pelicans, seagulls, and Humboldt penguins, whose population has decreased by 10%. In 2023 alone, the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca) has detected 8,140 deaths, almost double the total number of deaths in the last 14 years combined (4,392).
