Did builders of Egypt’s first pyramid use a water-powered elevator?

A diagram of the area around Djoser pyramid shows how water from a nearby Nile tributary could have been collected and channeled to the pyramid, where it may have been used as part of a hydraulic lift system, according to new research.
The controversial new study suggests that a stone-walled dam (far left) fed flood water to a deep trench (center). That water was then sent to a shaft inside the first ancient Egyptian pyramid (far right).
